Background:
Tanzania Fertilizer Company Limited is a Fertilizer trading Company owned by Government of United republic of Tanzania. It was established in 1968 through the Companies Ordinance (cap 212) and given certificate of registration no. 4335. The initial function of the Company which was a joint venture between the Government of Tanzania through National Development Corporation (NDC) and M/S Kclocner –INA of Germany, was to run the fertilizer production plant which was situated in Tanga.
Tanga production facility was closed down in 1991 on technical grounds and the same year M/S Kclocner-INA surrendered all their shares to The Government of Tanzania which eventually became sole shareholder. Company main business is importation, procurement and distribution of various types of fertilizer in the Country.

Strategic Roles of TFC
To make sure that farmers throughout the Country are supplied with high quality but affordable fertilizers.
To make sure that the right type of fertilizer is available on the right time at the right place regardless of Country vast geographical nature.
To provide relevant expertise, information and advice on issues of production, supply and distribution of fertilizers in the Country.
Structure:
TFC is State owned Company under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The operations of the Company are delegated to the Board of Directors which is appointed by the relevant Minister with day to day activities being under management team headed by General Manager.
General Manager, who is appointed by the Board of Directors, is Chief Executive Officer of the company and is assisted by three departmental Managers, Finance Manager, Commercial Manager and Human Resources Manager. There is also Internal Audit unit headed by Chief Internal Auditor reporting to General Manager.
The Company is divided into four zones each one headed by Zone Manager. The Zones are:
(i) Songea Zone:
The Zone covers Iringa, Ruvuma and New region of Njoluma and has selling centres at Iringa Municipal, Makambako, Njombe, and Songea.
(ii) Mbeya Zone:
Covers Mbeya and Rukwa Regions with selling centres in Mbeya Town and Sumbawanga.
(iii) Nothern Zone
covering, Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara with selling centres at Moshi and Arusha.
(iv) Western Zone:
Covering Regions of Tabora, Mwanza, Kigoma, Shinyanga, Mara and new Regions of Katavi and Geita. The main selling centre is at Tabora.
